Maybe it’s just me but I really took flight when I heard this song, the third time. The first two times not so much. It was just too rich for me, maybe because I was sick and couldn’t hear another tune about Life, the Universe and Everything Else at the moment. The second time I was in a friend’s car and I asked her what she thought and she like it so much she made me write this piece.
Finally, I got it. It’s the bass line. The damn thing sounds so like a Beatles song and a King Crimson song stuck together with long soulful plucks and intricate 1st string trills coming down from beyond the 12fret, on a bass! Then the song began to unfold for me. Figuratively speaking, the song has sharp corners where the chords change (I like the tightness), well-place breaks and quick turnarounds that make you focus on the lyrics to keep the whole thing ringing in your head.
If you like nicely put together, this is that. It pulls a certain string in your belly that goes past the rainbow children and speaks soley to our individuality as inhabitants of the planet. If you can get past the dry ice and candle light, this song has a lot to say without compromising the artists original vision.
