Electraverb | Feel the Fear

Message from the Artist:

“Chris and Mazdak, once the heartbeat of the late 90’s London based live band Stoneblue, reunite under the banner of Elecraverb. The Neon album is a fusion of their past, blending catchy melodies and intricate guitar riffs into a diverse 80’s inspired sound. Joined on backing vocals on four tracks by Jo Garland (George Michael, Kylie, Robbie Williams) and Shirley Lewis (George Michael, Sting, Elton John).”

Electraverb contacted me a few days ago. I can’t say I remember these guys from the 90s but that might be better. The nineties are a blur. While the song Feel the Fear pounded through the Bose speakers behind me I fiddled with this review. I don’t listen to much of this kind of music but I know it has a place in many people’s playlisted hearts. And this song addresses the genre well enough for me to give it a nod. So here we go.

From the beginning, the single arpeggio to start always pulls me in. As the bass and drums kick in the keyboard trilling turns into more of a pad sweep with a tightly compressed layer of guitar approximations over top. The song fills in through a couple of verses and ultimately reaches a nice pre-chorus/bridge part that introduces the backing vocals. This was the highlight of the song for me and I would have liked to hear more. That extra vocal element, rhythmically introduced behind and beside the high-in-the-mix percussion, caresses the bass and peppers the overall vocal delivery with unexpected tones of suspense. It’s a joy to listen to. At this point the singer begins to break out a little and the passion for his words starts to emerge. Whether this was a deliberate build in the song or just getting into it later in the track, it works. The backing vocal merges each component part with precision. There is a real attempt at a considered composition here.

The lyrical contribution is big on delivering the mood of the song. The word ‘fear’ is like a magnet for tuning in and it’s repeated often, which of course is the hallmark of a contender. Can you repeat the same concept in words over and over with enough texture and expression to make it part of the melody? In Feel the Fear, Maz and Chris have been able to do exactly that.

If you’re into the steady beat and rhythm of 90s electro-beat, ala Depeche Mode, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark and a more edgy Tears for Fears then you’ll probably get into Electraverb. Check out their songs on Spotify. ELECTRAVERB. Look it up!
