Artist: Star SGHowes

Song Style: 2024
The song, “Alone“, by SGHowes from his latest release “Not Everything That’s Lost is Gone” (2024, self-published), takes a small audio hook and turns it into a well syncopated drone, mirroring the song structure of a classic, but hybrid, ballad style. The singing is contemporary with the lyrics, weaving together the right blend of catastrophe-averted and unsaid-remorse to give balance to the subject’s personal loneliness. With a slow build in sonic weight past 1:00m, the tune begins to take shape. Heartfelt lyrics sung in a weaving monotone style, that works with the background effects, are highlighted when SGHowes breaks out a bit and let’s us hear his fine vocal capabilities. The song provides surprises on the sonic end and the ideas, both with the words and with the music, add creative tension without breaking the song’s flow. The small interlude in the middle is a well thought out guitar pattern that I could have heard more of. But that can be a good thing. More tension begins to build. At this point, the listener senses the song begin to crest, progressively insistent until it stops. The end. The fact of it being fully self-produced is certainly a mark in its favour. The lyrics held my interest but I found my self more in sync with the music. Maybe it’s my accent.
We’ll be listening for more music coming out from SGHowes as he sharpens his many talents for us all to enjoy.
