Alone | SGHowes

Artist: Star SGHowes
Song Style: 2024

Reviewer: Dee

The song, “Alone, by SGHowes from his latest release “Not Everything That’s Lost is Gone” (2024, self-published), takes a small audio hook and turns it into a well syncopated drone, mirroring the song structure of a classic, but hybrid, ballad style. The singing is contemporary with the lyrics, weaving together the right blend of catastrophe-averted and unsaid-remorse to give balance to the subject’s personal loneliness. With a slow build in sonic weight past 1:00m, the tune begins to take shape. Heartfelt lyrics sung in a weaving monotone style, that works with the background effects, are highlighted when SGHowes breaks out a bit and let’s us hear his fine vocal capabilities. The song provides surprises on the sonic end and the ideas, both with the words and with the music, add creative tension without breaking the song’s flow. The small interlude in the middle is a well thought out guitar pattern that I could have heard more of. But that can be a good thing. More tension begins to build. At this point, the listener senses the song begin to crest, progressively insistent until it stops. The end. The fact of it being fully self-produced is certainly a mark in its favour. The lyrics held my interest but I found my self more in sync with the music. Maybe it’s my accent.

We’ll be listening for more music coming out from SGHowes as he sharpens his many talents for us all to enjoy.

I guess it’s been a good day. Interesting mix. Very Buckaroo Banzai with the Brother accent if you’ve seen the movie. Aliens colonizing Earth yada yada… Black men falling from pods… watermelon. This has an acid jazz sound and feel that goes well with the syncopated lyrics and standard forms of verse. The imagistic word play tempting us to come to the next world is fun to go along with and draws me into the tune. As such, the relatively canned music and samples are way more digestible than usual. The resonant voice of the singer/talker/rapper/ orator is captivating. The vocal could need limiting as it peaks just one too many times. Other than that, nothing stuck out and knocked me off the groove, which was surfing deep in the pocket most of the way. Fleet of Nations successfully fires off the next booster in this futurist artist’s creative space journey. Bon Voyage, Captain!

I may go nowhere but this tune goes and goes. I like the sex pistol echoes and the drone that starts somewhere after the first chorus. I like the middle and the end better than the start. Cool vocal and imagistic lyrics. It’s my taste but maybe that’s not saying much. @dee_mondo

Still very relevant music that hasn’t dated in any way. The structures in these songs don’t echo some of the ‘Kashmir’ sound as much as his solo material. But the 60s/70s influence in the melodies and that certain flair for a throaty production do persist. Two expressive voices.

“Jeffrey Morgan’s Media Blackout”

Desmond Grundy – Oddly Enough (self released) :: So I’m spinnin’ the first song and suddenly thinking that, no, the absolute last thing I wanna do is say that Desmond is the new Lou Reed ’cause he seems to be way too normal to be saddled with that kind of calamitous tag. But every time I hear the gnarly destorto guitar grinding up behind him, I get flummoxed into thinking that I’m listening to some kinda vintage Velvet Underground gradation. And suddenly I’m thinking, yes, that’s cool because nobody sounds like Unca Lou anymore -not even the old reprobate himself ’cause he’s way too normal these days to be saddled with that kind of calamitous tag.

review music:
Def. a band that creates a buzz. A real salamander on the basement floor. It’s rare to hear a girl front a very noisy metal band, but it works. Well thought out with bruising hooks and labelled riffs like 60s psych. Intriguing This is a good trend -for me.

Fred and the Voice Males

Message from the Artist:

‘This song made a lot of sense at the time. I think it’s still great!’

Song Name: Blue Balls
Song Writer: Cookie Policy (aka Fred)
Song Style: Easy Rock

Reviewer: Satire

There is no one named Fred in the band is the first thing you need to know. And why do you need to know that? Fred is the name of the band’s current release and its about a girl named Fred and there are only guys in this band. Second thing is, Blue Balls is a great song.

The tune starts with a slowly building acoustic guitar voicing dominant seventh chords one bitter tone after the other and begins to mellow out into what will surely become a family classic around certain campfires. With banjo lyrics twanging superior loss scenarios around ever resolving verse sequences  the chorus stands out as the band wales on about drug abuse and fast cars. It’s a summer banger if you like the likes of ‘Wanna Be Sedated’ and ‘California Sun’

The band is currently touring the rooms in their basement but they’re latest case of licks is about to get showcased on the Strip. So watch out this summer for the band and check out the links below if you need more.
